Amazon Eyes Cherry Hill for New 230K SF Mega Retail Concept

Amazon is actively developing a new large-scale retail concept, with early plans pointing to potential expansion in Cherry Hill.

According to reports from Business Insider, the company is advancing a 230,000-square-foot “mega” retail store prototype. While the first project has already received approval in Illinois, Cherry Hill has been identified as one of several potential future locations.

However, details regarding a New Jersey location remain limited. The Cherry Hill site was referenced in internal company documents obtained by the publication. At this time, no confirmed site plans, approvals, or timelines have been announced.

Even so, the scale of the concept has drawn attention. A 230,000-square-foot footprint would require a significant development site. Therefore, identifying a suitable location within Cherry Hill’s highly developed landscape could present challenges.

That said, the inclusion of Cherry Hill in early-stage planning signals strong interest in the Southern New Jersey market. The area continues to attract national retailers due to its dense population, strong demographics, and regional accessibility.

Meanwhile, Amazon appears to be refining its physical retail strategy. In recent years, the company tested multiple concepts, including Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go stores. Many of those initiatives were scaled back or closed earlier this year.

Now, a new approach is emerging. This larger-format concept is expected to combine retail, distribution, and fulfillment capabilities under one roof. As a result, Amazon could improve efficiency while expanding its in-person shopping presence.

Additionally, internal reports suggest long-term growth potential. If early pilot locations perform well, the company could roll out dozens of similar stores nationwide.

Overall, while details remain preliminary, the possibility of an Amazon mega retail location in Cherry Hill highlights continued evolution in the retail landscape. Large-format, hybrid retail and logistics facilities may play a key role in the next phase of brick-and-mortar strategy.
